THE DORJE BAKERY CAFÉ & COFFEE CENTER
Lhakpa Tamang Jangba, motivated by his father’s dream of opening a bakery, built the Dorje Bakery high in the Langtang Valley of Nepal. He and his wife, Nima, with no electricity, a single gas-powered oven, solar-powered lights, and a wood stove for heat, struggled for years to create a viable business, meticulously adapting recipes for the high altitude and the varied tastes of their customers - local Nepalis and international trekkers. After four years, they succeeded in establishing the Dorje Bakery as a renowned and much-adored community gathering place.
But everything changed on April 25, 2015 when the Nepali earthquake and landslide swiftly and utterly destroyed the Langtang Valley. Over 300 local villagers were killed. Lhakpa and Nima lost members of their family, lost their bakery and lost their community. Despite these extreme personal losses, Lhakpa immediately began helping others: ensuring the rescue helicopters prioritized transporting all the injured rst; helping his fellow villagers learn new skills so they could continue to earn income; and, serving on the Langtang Reconstruction Committee. Lhakpa defines the word hero.
MY CONNECTION
Our 19-year old daughter, Sydney, and her friend, Bailey, were also killed during the catastrophic April 2015 earthquake and landslide in Langtang. In the early days of our grief, Lhakpa thoughtfully contacted us in the U.S. to send Sydney’s entry in his Dorje Bakery guestbook and to share his memories of meeting the girls; we learned they had visited the Dorje Bakery the day before the quake. Last fall, we had the privilege of meeting Lhakpa and Nima in person in Nepal. Struck by their warmth, generosity and compassion, we immediately knew we wanted to help them rebuild – a small gesture in the midst of unspeakable loss but work our Sydney would enthusiastically support .
RAISING MONEY FOR REBUILDING
Please help rebuild the Dorje Bakery! Your donations will allow Lhakpa and Nima to purchase building materials (roof, walls, windows), kitchen and serving equipment, and pay for transporting all these essentials to the remote Langtang Valley.
