More than 1,400 people have been killed, thousands are still missing, and entire communities have been devastated by the recent floods in Nepal. As families begin rebuilding, another urgent need is becoming clear.
Dendi Sherpa, founder of the Center for Disabled Children’s Assistance (CDCA) in Kapan Nepal, says a current government assessment estimates that around 500 people will need wheelchairs because of the floods and their aftermath. With no wheelchair distribution currently planned for this year, hundreds of people could be left without the mobility they need at one of the hardest moments of their life.
That is why we are stepping up again.
Because Dendi reached out after the floods to ask for help getting more wheelchairs to Nepal as quickly as possible, the answer was simple: the need is real, we know how to help, and now is the time to act.
We know how to help because we’ve been a part of this work from the beginning. In 2018, it started with eight wheelchairs and a simple goal: give Dendi and the CDCA a hand up so that they could build something sustainable in Nepal. From there, we connected Dendi with the Wheelchair Foundation and helped fund the first two containers of wheelchairs sent to Nepal. After that, others stepped in and kept the momentum going.
That was always the goal: to give a hand up, not create something dependent on us, but to build something that could keep going without us. And now, when the need is greater than ever, we have the opportunity to step back in and help again. Because for someone who has lost so much, a wheelchair can mean mobility, independence, and a way forward.
Our goal is to fund one full container of wheelchairs for Nepal. A container costs $56,000, but we have already secured matching funds for half. That means we only need to raise $28,000 to make this shipment happen. Every dollar gets us closer to putting these wheelchairs into the hands of people who need them now.
Sometimes hope has wheels. Help us deliver it to Nepal.
