I’m Michael Sohmer from San Diego, California. I’m a retired clinical pharmacist, longtime disaster-response professional, and co-founder of Sweeping Change, a nonprofit organization that has worked directly with communities in Nepal through medical missions, health education, and humanitarian projects.
I have traveled to Nepal multiple times and have longstanding relationships with Nepali colleagues and community partners. This fundraiser was created in response to the recent devastating floods affecting communities in Nepal.
Medical care will be at the heart of this response. I am assembling a team of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other medical professionals to travel to Nepal and provide care to people affected by the flooding. Team members will pay for their own international airfare. Sweeping Change will cover the team’s food, lodging, and in-country transportation once we reach the designated launching point.
The funds raised will support both the medical mission and the people who have been displaced. Donations will help provide medications, wound-care supplies, medical equipment, and other clinical needs, as well as food, clean water, hygiene supplies, clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, shelter materials, and other basic necessities.
This is the same practical approach we used when responding to the 2015 Nepal earthquake. At that time, we purchased rice, cooking oil, shoes, eyeglasses, medications, wound-care supplies, and other essential items based on what people actually needed on the ground.
We will do the same this time. Rather than guessing in advance, we will work with our trusted partners and communities in Nepal to identify the most urgent needs and direct the funds where they can have the greatest immediate impact.
This fundraiser is organized in support of Sweeping Change, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Funds raised through this campaign will be transferred to Sweeping Change’s organizational bank account and used for our Nepal flood-relief response.
Thank you for helping us bring both medical care and essential humanitarian support to people who need it most.
