UPDATE: Spring 2026

This GoFundMe was originally established in 2024-25 to help AB Hernandez, a rising California high school track star, and her mother, Nereyda, when they found themselves at the center of a highly-coordinated anti-LGBTQ harassment campaign.

Throughout 2024-25, several anti-LGBTQ hate groups (the same groups who tried to ban gay marriage in California) focused their time, attention, and social media platforms on Nereyda and AB, her daughter under the banners of “Save Girls Sports” and “Protect Girls Sports.” A schoolboard trustee and an employee of a far-right law firm doxxed AB on a massive public scale, leaking her personal info, and outing AB (a minor) as trans.

Shortly after she was outed, AB noticed menacing strangers showing up to her high school track meets. Unfamiliar adults were driving hours to film AB and give footage of her to harassment accounts like “Libs of TikTok” and “XX_XY” (a clothing company that made money off of AB’s likeness even as it mocked her). Nereyda was horrified to see death threats and threats to physically hurt her child proliferate across the Internet in the comments section of accounts like these.

The harassment and bullying snowballed with the mention of AB’s name on Gavin Newsom’s podcast with Charlie Kirk. And, right before the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships, President Trump singled out AB and directed law enforcement to NOT protect her at track meets.

Ensuring AB’s safety thus became a full-time job for Nereyda Hernandez. Nereyda, the family's sole bread winner, took time off work to file police reports and speak with law enforcement personnel charged with keeping AB safe. Because she did not have a lawyer, Nena also filed her own legal paperwork. Attending to her child’s mental health and physical safety soon took a financial toll on this single mother.

This GoFundMe was originally designed to help the Hernandez family catch up on the bills that piled up as they put their lives on hold.

In late 2025, Nereyda and AB had hoped they were through the woods and that AB could finish her senior year in peace. CIF’s new pilot policy – which decrees that trans athletes can not displace cisgender competitors – should have put an end to the “Trans girls are stealing our medals!” argument of the far-right.

However, despite the fact that trans female athletes are neither permitted to compete in college nor are they eligible for scholarships, the hate groups have continued to aim a firehose of harassment at AB and her family. (The anti-trans harassment campaign not only generates funds for the hate groups, it has also become the centerpiece of one politician's run for statewide office.)

Thus, in 2026, just as they were coming up for air, Nereyda and AB were dismayed to again find themselves the target of a hate campaign.

The goal of this current GoFundMe is to help the family catch up on bills and achieve the financial stability they lost while missing work to protect AB, as well as to give AB a small cushion to help her launch her life post high school graduation.

Nereyda is a single mom who supports her family and community out in the Inland Empire. A.B. is her daughter. If their names sound familiar, it’s probably because you’ve read about A.B.’s determination, grace under fire, and talent as she competed in high school track this year.

Politicians ranging from Charlie Kirk to extremist Sonja Shaw to Donald Trump whipped up hatred towards trans people by invoking AB’s name.

Throughout it all, A.B. kept competing.

And throughout it all, Nereyda supported her child.

Nereyda dropped everything she was doing to ensure her daughter was safe at track meets, even as death threats piled up and random strangers started showing up to stadiums to film and harass her kid.

Ensuring A.B. was safe became Nereyda's full-time job. Protecting A.B. meant taking time away from her own small business, leading to a loss of income.

The harassment campaign against A.B. began in October 2024 and has lasted eight months.

Nereyda is just now getting back to her daily life, and expenses have accumulated.

Nereyda is known in her community for helping those in need. As an L.D.A/Notary, she offers her skills free of charge to families who need extra help.

Our goal is to raise money to help Nereyda cover bills and make up for the work hours she lost while ensuring her daughter’s safety.

As Nereyda told the LA Times: “To every young person watching, especially those who feel unseen or unheard, let AB be your reminder that authenticity, courage, and resilience shine BRIGHTER than hate,” she said. “It won’t be easy, but definitely worth it.”
