On January 31st of this year, our world changed as we knew it as our mother was rushed to the ER for excruciating head pain. Before she lost consciousness, the doctors in Alice discovered that our mother's brain was bleeding. She was immediately HALO flown to Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi to be cared for by their Neurology ICU. Once in the ICU, mom went through an intense treatment of intubation, a burr hole procedure, and eventually a craniotomy to clip her brain aneurysm. With non-stop prayer from our family, her friends, the Alice community and beyond, our mom opened her eyes a few days later. Our family is incredibly grateful for the prayers over our mom and the doctors and nurses that played a part in saving her life as 50% of ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal. After an extended stay in the hospital then rehab to follow, mom was able to come home in the middle of March. Although we found it a blessing for her home coming, we were met with the challenge of a global pandemic.
Of those who survive brain aneurysm, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Our mom, who has worked every day of her life, has been deemed incapable of going back to work and our father has found himself without employment as the oil field opportunities have closed. Dad is now mom's full time care giver as she has weekly doctors appointments and currently bi-weekly procedures for her eyes, as they were affected by her aneurysm burst. These appointments, procedures, medications, and hospital stays have built up a costly bill of close to half a million dollars as our parents' shared Christian network has decided to not cover the majority of her bills.
Our mother has worked as a social worker a majority of her life and has helped the less fortunate in any way possible. If you know Nena, you know that she would give the shirt off her back if you needed it. She strives, even to this day, to help others, but is finding herself now more than ever in the position of needing help. Our parents are currently living day to day in the hopes that God will provide.
Our family is coming to you humbly to ask for financial assistance for our mother. These funds will be used for medical bills, treatments, medications, and other needs for our mother's well being and health. Thank you for any amount of donation that you can provide.
