Community Spaces +Love for Refugees
What's going down....
The carnage in Syria and other countries is disgusting. Millions of people are fleeing their home country, leaving behind their civilised lives in search of a place of safety, peace and help. It's even more disgusting that once the refugees finally reach Europe they find that they are not welcome, as the borders are shut and compassion is scarce within the icy cold hearts of today's status quo.
There are many volunteers at Thessaloniki building shelters for the refugees once they cross the sea from their war torn homelands. They provide food, shelter and ultimately life. This crowd funding appeal is to help volunteers contribute time and energy into doing as much as they can for these people in desperate need of human compassion and love.
"At the peak of the Greek debt crisis, when Europe shuts its borders to the refugees, Greeks take a different approach. Zoe Papadopoulos from Kilkis - Thessaloniki's Volunteers for the Refugees of Syria talks to Kyriakos Gold about how a team of people in the Northern Greek shows that what is not in crisis is humanity."
We are working with 'The Get Sh*t Done Team' at Thessaloniki, which started with a mobile workshop to build sun shades, drainage, flood prevention and community spaces in refugee camps in Northern Greece. Here is the facebook page.
What's the dosh for then?
Your contribution to this crowd funding page will go towards funding:
-Building materials and help for the Get Sh*t Done Team
-Art materials and musical instruments for the community, and their travel costs on planes etc.
-Educational community projects, introducing permaculture and other useful practical skills for refugees to grow their knowledge of self sustainability.
- Travel costs for more volunteers to go to Thessaloniki to commit their time and energy into helping / building
Want to come volunteer too?
We can provide accommodation and food during your time helping in Thessaloniki for the refugee camps. Please note there will be NO WAGES from the support from this page, only bare essentials for each person to be well and happy volunteering their time to help the refugees in local camps.
Who on Earth are we?
My name is Nemi and I'm a (starving) artist and musician living in Kent. I have been working as a freelancer, doing all sorts of projects, festival builds, design degree, welding /engineering course and doing care work for people with autism and dementia. I volunteered in Calais and now I'm off to Greece. As well as using my site skills for building shelters for refugees, I am inspired to bring art and music to the refugee children and families who have witnessed such devastation. My plan is to start a social enterprise called 'Heart Recreation' that does creative work for humanitarian causes, like building homes for refugees, providing art and music workshops to communities, youth work, workshops for autistic people etc. My personal work reflects this, and now I'm looking to branch out and create a platform that encourages other creative people to use their skills for good causes too.
My gorgeous partner Cai is a wonderful creative and compassionate man. He is the bloke you will find clearing up Deal beach and any beach he finds himself on! Cai is a practising tree surgeon and is learning how to be a healer from a genuine Ecuadorian shaman. He has run music events for many years and we now run some events together. Our band Icaro creates conscious hip hop with a political and spiritual focus. We have been working towards empowering and inspiring the community of Deal and Dover with our open mic night, conscious hip hop night Lyrical Lounge and other musical platforms.
Here are some links to the projects that we founded and run together:
