Hello everyone! This is a fund run by Holly and Casey to help cover the costs of our rescue dog Nelson’s Epilepsy Treatment.
Nelson is a rescue dog who’s a kind and sweet good boy from Texas. He was brought to Canada last year, was treated for heartworm and in foster care for 7 months.
Casey and I adopted him in March of 2021 and he has been a joy and light in our life ever since.
On Friday July 9th Nelson suffered from one visible seizure causing serious convulsions in his body, and foaming at the mouth. This seizure lasted about a minute in length and was frightening to witness to say the least. We called the emergency animal hospital and we’re told to monitor him for 24 hours to see if he had another.
Over the weekend he did fine, and on Tuesday July 13th we brought him to our family vet to get blood work done as recommended by the emergency vet.
Today Wednesday July 14th after his morning walk he suffered from another visible seizure around 9 am. We phoned our family vet and we’re told to monitor him again and call if had another. 1:30pm and another seizure happens. This time causing him to loose control of his bladder and bowel movements. After he came to, we lifted him into the car and drove to our family vet. They took him in immediately and monitored him for around 1 hour.
Nelson was discharged and nothing came up on his blood work results leaving out and organ or toxin related causes for his seizures. They treated him with Phenobarbital and gave us a prescription for 60 mg tablets of it and Valium 5mg injections to bring home if he had a seizure longer than 1 minute.
We brought him home and he was pretty dopey and sleepy after the medicine.
9pm rolls around and he got up started roaming around but soon fell over with convulsions and foaming at the mouth. This was his 3rd seizure of the day so we had to take him to the emergency animal hospital.
Emerg took him in and put him on an IV and set him up in case he had another seizure. Busy night at the hospital because we had to wait until 11pm for the okay to head home and that they were keeping him overnight.
12:15 rolls around and we received a call from the emergency vet saying he had another seizure and that he needs to be put on heavy doses of Phenobarbital to help get him out of the cluster seizure state.
this is an 8-24 hour procedure, because if his seizures start to cluster again they need to start all over with the higher doses.
Here is the treatment plan for him, which does not include the initial vet fees from his first seizure diagnosis:
Now because of his bloodwork coming back negative for external to the brain causes, the emergency vet has ruled it to internal to the brain, most likely a brain tumour.
She did suggest getting a consultation with a neurologist and an MRI done if that was possible, but at the end of the day Nelson is a 7+ year old dog suffering from cluster seizures and we have no knowledge of his medical history prior to his time at the rescue. All we can do for him is help is quality of life, which he will suffer from seizures for the rest of his days, even if medication can treat them.
The emergency vet gave him weeks to months left. He probably won’t see the year end even if the medication does help suppress them.
So for now all we are asking for is to help cover his vet costs from this week and a bit more if any other costs come up for him in his last little bit. Any bit helps towards his treatment and medication costs along with other quality of life aids that may help him along (supplements, food and nutrition adjustments, etc).
Thank you all for reading this far and if you decide to donate and share it means the world to us, we can’t thank you enough.❤️
