The Story:
If you know anything about Nelly, you know that she's always been a beautiful, independent and most importantly a healthy young woman. She can quite literally eat her weight in tacos and somehow still keep up with her gym routine. For all 25 years of her life Nelly has made her physical health a priority; unfortunately, Nelly was born with an abnormality in her brain in which an artery and a vein overlapped each other. Since this was internal, it was not detected in routine check-ups.
On November 7, 2018, the vein and the artery ruptured causing what doctors call a Hemorrhagic Stroke. A hemorrhagic stroke is a brain aneurysm burst in which blood spills into or around the brain and creates swelling and pressure, damaging cells and tissue in the brain.
Nelly was taken to the emergency room on Nov. 7 and has been in ICU ever since. As of right now, surgery would be too dangerous for her already swollen brain, but a procedure was performed to temporarily seal the burst blood vessel and hopefully avoid another stroke. Nelly suffered a very severe first stroke and a second one could prove to be fatal.
Nelly is stable for now, but in the ICU things can change rapidly and without warning. The hope is that she stays stable, the swelling in her brain comes down, and we can avoid surgery. If that is the case, Nelly will be moved out of ICU but will remain a high-risk patient. At that point, the extremely long road to recovery begins.
It will not be easy, and it will not be cheap. This is where we turn to you, her friends, her coworkers, distant family members, strangers, anyone willing to help. Nelly is young, and as far as we knew very healthy, she has a long life left to live, but everything will be vastly different from here on forward.
Before Nelly's aneurysm she lived on her own, worked, drove her own car, etc. this will not be the case once she is out of the hospital. Nelly will need 24/7 care and will be living with Uncle & Aunt, Marco & Lethy. This will not be a smooth transition and will require physical therapy, rehab stays, medications.
We are sure other expenses will come forward like:
Hospital bills
Medical equipment for home care
ETC.
Nelly's journey and battle will not end because of the money raised here, but it will vastly help get her on the road to recovery quicker. As of right now, our priority is being with her through this hospital stay but also preparing a safe and accessible environment for her recovery once she is discharged.
Once she is discharged we will take on at home rehab and physical therapy with Nelly but unfortunately it will be some time before she is released from the hospital. Thankfully that gives us time to prepare for her needs.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read Nelly's story. If you could please take a moment to share her story with your friends and family, we would be forever grateful. Any amount that you could donate no matter how small will be greatly appreciated #NellysRecovery
