Neighborhood Greenhouse for Local Seedlings

Two years ago, I started selling vegetable seedlings from my front yard in Regent Square. What began as a simple spring experiment has grown into Neighborhood Garden Supply — and last year, I was thrilled to provide 200 seedlings to local gardeners. Now, I’m ready to take the next step and build a greenhouse that will help me serve our community even better.

Right now, the biggest challenge is space and protecting young plants from the cold during March and April. A 16 x 8 ft greenhouse with a stable, insulated base and a solid frame will provide the consistent warmth and light needed to properly raise tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and many more varieties. With this new space, I’ll be able to increase the number of seedlings available in spring, expand into more unique and heirloom varieties, and improve plant health and early-season strength — all while growing more consistently despite unpredictable weather.

Funds raised will go directly toward materials and setup: lumber and framing, greenhouse panels, insulated base and flooring, shelving, and heating and ventilation equipment. My goal is to complete construction in late winter so seedlings can be transferred there in March, just in time for spring planting season. The greenhouse will be built on a new plot of land in McKeesport, the future home of Sundial Farms. Over time, I hope this space becomes more than just a greenhouse: a small urban growing space that supports local food production and connects people to where their plants — and food — come from.

Gardening has always been a central part of my life. I’m a neuroscientist who has lived in Regent Square for over 10 years, and I love transforming raw agricultural ingredients into craft food — brewing beer and cider, making tomato sauce, and perfecting homemade pizza. Food brings people together and connects us to our environment. I’m also an avid woodworker and a strong believer in a do-it-yourself approach, so I plan to build this greenhouse myself, creating a structure that will serve our neighborhood for years to come.

As a thank you, I’d love to share something in return: supporters will receive heirloom seedlings, curated bundles, or even homemade tomato sauce and handcrafted wood items, depending on your level of support. All are warmly invited to the Biddle Ave Spring Seedling Sale for refreshments and a complimentary drink. I’ll follow up with contributors to coordinate details. If you’ve purchased seedlings before, stopped by the front-yard stand, or simply believe in supporting small, local growers, I would be grateful for your support — whether by contributing or sharing this campaign. Thank you for helping Neighborhood Garden Supply take root in McKeesport and grow into Sundial Farms. I’m excited to see what we can grow together.
