Help to renovate an old log house.

Ville, Ninni and Arvin The Dog need your help.

Hi! It's Ville writing here. As some of you know already, me and Ninni bought ourselves a house from the countryside at the end of last year. It was a long waited result from living together in a tiny apartment, saving and working full time for years. Especially the last few years have been really hectic and stressful in many ways, and we were really, really relieved, and excited when we finally found ourselves and old log house from beautiful, interesting and peaceful area 40 kilometers west from Helsinki. Both of us have lived in old wooden houses before and taken part in bigger and smaller renovations, so we knew how it would be when living in a house without tap water for example. Or using woolen stockins from August to June. So to make living a little more comfourtable, we had planned and scheduled some renovations before moving in, such as upgrading the floor insulation, and repairing the fireplaces with a friend who has bricklaying scholarship.

It rarely goes as it is planned. Shortly after I had moved all my belongings there, we unpredictably found some rotten from the lowest logs, hidden under the exterior boarding. It is unreasonable to ignore the rotten parts and hide it under a new wallpaper so we called in a recommended traditional renovator to take a look, and to do what needs to be done. We ended up changing (the term is kengittää – to shoe?) and repairing around 140 metres of logs in four weeks. To achieve it, we needed to detach all the floors, windows, doors, moldings, kithchen, interior walls, and exterior boarding. Most of the detached elements kept their shape, and some didn't. What is left now is a strong framework, a huge pile of trash on the yard, and a bundle of unpaid bills. Everything else needs to be rebuild, preferably before winter.

As you might know, renovating a house can be super expensive, and the prices grow exponentially everytime you ask a professional to solve a problem you cannot solve by yourself. This time it doubled our budget. At the moment me and Ninni are counting the leftover pennies, and finding out that we have no chance to make it work after couple of weeks.

We both are really modest as well as stubborn when it comes into the terms of Do It Yourself. Asking this sort of a help, even from our closests friends is hard for us, though it won't change the fact that we feel really fortunate and safe having you all in our life. We are truly grateful if you feel like you could help us one way or another. Thank you.

Yours,

Ville and Ninni
