A couple weeks ago I took my car in for an oil change (it's a 2020 GMC Terrain, I purchased it when it was 2 years old and have owned it for 3 years). When I took it in, the engine was making a light rattling noise, but had no major issues going on that I was aware of. When I asked the mechanic about the source of the rattling sound, he said that it was going to be due for a tune up in another 3000 miles and was likely just running rough. They recommended a few things in their inspection (oil leaks, brake pads) but nothing that stood out to me as anything that would result in catastrophic engine failure in the near future.
A week later, my car wouldn't start. After paying them another $400 to have it towed back to them and a "diagnosis" I was told that the engine had seized, it was unrepairable and would need a new motor which they quoted me $13,000 to replace. When I questioned them as far as if there was any culpability on their end regarding their oil change, they stated that everything they had done was fine, and basically I had brought them a car on the verge of failure and this was not related to their work. This was the Lamb's on Slaughter Ln which I had worked with for years on the fleet vehicles in my previous jobs and thought I could trust.
During this time, due to being without any form of transportation my son has missed one week of ABA therapy, I have missed 2 classes and have only been able to get to work because of the kindness of my coworker who is willing to let me ride with her.
I've since taken it to someone else, and after explaining the situation and how I feel I've been completely taken advantage of, they have agreed to help me out by replacing the motor for $2,200 which is an amazingly low price. They will not be making any money from this repair.
My problem is that if I pay the $2200, I will not be able to pay my house payment.
Our transportation is the only thing that allows me to provide for my family.
