Need help for eye therapy following an assault
Donation protected
Hi,
My name is Tracy Roberts and on January 7th, 2021, I was kicked in the head from behind while gardening in my neighborhood in Seattle. I had a left orbital blowout (4 fractures around the left eye), fractured left cheekbone, fractured sinus above the nose and shattered nose on both sides. I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury(TBI), concussion and PTSD. I have multiple symptoms that have severely affected me and required surgery to put the eye that had dropped into the left sinus, back into place. I continue to need weekly eye therapy sessions to strengthen the eye muscles and re-establish a connection between the eye and the brain. I have been diagnosed with nerve damage in the left eye that's been attributed to the assault. I require supplements and medical botox injections every three months into my face, along the hairline and both shoulders to reduce the frequency and intensity of the trauma migraines. I was in a Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program earlier this year which has helped.
23 months ago, there was a fundraiser for my financial needs following the assault which has now run out. My insurance and L&I's Crime Victim Compensation Program cover some medical treatment and meds, but not all. My insurance and L&I do not cover the eye therapy which is over $2070 for a unit of 12 weeks and I need one or two more units, with regular evaluations that will continue after the end of therapy to monitor my progress. Restitution was ordered by the judge and the man who assaulted me agreed to pay everything back to me, but he's facing another trial and more charges when he violated probation, so who knows if I will receive anything.
Returning to nursing would mean I would have financial stability but have to do a refresher course to activate my RN license and would need to complete a CPR class prior. Even though I was still struggling with my symptoms, I wanted to see if I could cope with the class. The plan was if I managed well I would start the course this year and would be able to afford to continue eye therapy in 2023. Unfortunately, I didn't cope well during the class and slept for 3 hours afterward. Hypersomnia and exhaustion are symptoms I have experienced for 23 months following the assault and realized if I could not cope with a 3-hour class, I would not be able to do the 7-month course. I will continue rehabilitation before applying for the course.
I have been told my eyesight will never be the same and I'm ok with that, but I want to get as much back as possible. Any donations would be appreciated in helping continue treatment. Thank you.
