Soy Roberto Martínez, el artista visual que vive y respira a través de las artes gráficas, la enseñanza y la acción social. Soy el fundador de Taller de Gráfica Nahual, ese espacio que por casi 15 años ha sido un centro neurálgico para el grabado, el dibujo, la encuadernación y la acuarela. He dedicado mi vida a demostrar que el mundo es para intervenirlo, ya sea con una gubia en una placa o coordinando proyectos que transforman ciudades y vidas a través del arte y la movilidad no motorizada.

He llevado el arte de México al mundo: exposiciones en España, Alemania, Chile, Colombia, Perú, Ecuador... He liderado la comisión de Arte y Cultura del Sexto Foro Mundial de la Bicicleta y soy un miembro activo que lucha por la sustentabilidad y los espacios públicos. Mi camino, incluso con una discapacidad motriz, siempre ha sido de acción, de movimiento, de no conformarme.

Hoy, La Lucha Es Por Mi Columna

Hace meses que la vida me puso una placa más difícil de grabar: una reducción progresiva de la movilidad. Tras una eterna travesía por el sistema público, que simplemente no está listo para atender mi condición con la urgencia que requiere, recurrí a la medicina privada. En abril pasado, una cirugía cervical me dio un respiro.

Pero el reto no terminó ahí. El diagnóstico es claro y urgente: necesito otra descompresión medular a nivel lumbar. Sin esta intervención, la amenaza de perder permanentemente el movimiento de mis piernas es real e inminente.

¡No puedo quedarme quieto! Mi alma es un taller de grabado que necesita moverse. Necesito mis piernas para volver a caminar, para subirme a la bici y seguir proponiendo, para pararme frente al tórculo y seguir grabando, para compartir la magia del arte con ustedes en mi amado Taller.

Good morning, afternoon, evening, or early morning, friends, colleagues, and dreamers.

I am Roberto Martínez, a visual artist who lives and breathes through graphic arts, teaching, and social action. I am the founder of Taller de Gráfica Nahual, a space that for almost 15 years has been a hub for printmaking, drawing, bookbinding, and watercolour painting. I have dedicated my life to demonstrating that the world is there to be intervened in, whether with a gouge on a plate or by coordinating projects that transform cities and lives through art and non-motorised mobility.

I have brought Mexican art to the world: exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador... I have led the Art and Culture Commission of the Sixth World Bicycle Forum and am an active member fighting for sustainability and public spaces. My path, even with a motor disability, has always been one of action, movement, and non-conformity.

Today, the struggle is for my spine

Months ago, life handed me a more difficult challenge: a progressive reduction in mobility. After an endless journey through the public health system, which is simply not equipped to treat my condition with the urgency it requires, I turned to private medicine. Last April, cervical surgery gave me some relief.

But the challenge did not end there. The diagnosis is clear and urgent: I need another lumbar spinal decompression. Without this intervention, the threat of permanently losing the movement in my legs is real and imminent.

I can't stay still! My soul is an engraving workshop that needs to move. I need my legs to walk again, to get on my bike and keep going, to stand in front of the press and keep engraving, to share the magic of art with you in my beloved workshop.

Cover the cost of my spinal surgery (lumbar level).

Undergo pre-operative tests and cover hospital expenses (hospitalisation and medication).

Finance months of personal care and intensive physiotherapy for optimal and complete recovery.

I have had to move my Nahual Workshop from the Historic Centre to my home to reduce expenses and focus on this. It is a necessary step backwards in order to take many steps forwards.

I still have so much to create, teach and transform. I want to continue opening spaces, promoting projects and demonstrating that art and social action can move mountains, cities and, of course, my body.
