Near & Now at 107 Projects

This is a campaign to support some of the costs of delivering a brand new series of short form performance events called Near & Now, presented by Intimate Spectacle (Harley Stumm) and 107 in Redfern, Sydney.

Near & Now is an independent take on the short form, experimental performance night… showcasing the kind of live, unpolished, exciting and raw material that has recently disappeared from Sydney’s theatre calendars.

The project idea emerged from many discussions between producers, artists and audiences, lamenting the disappearance of short-form, low ticket price, experimental performance events. These events, held at venues such Lanfranchi's Memorial Discotheque, Bill & George and Frasers Studios  (to name but a few) gave opportunity for artists to show new works and ideas-in-progress to audiences.

The atmosphere of these performance nights was electric and permissive, with artists putting themselves on the line for an excited and engaged crowd. You only need to glance at the names in the back-catalogues of these events to see how integral they can be for the development of artists' work, and their establishment of an audience base.

107 and Intimate Spectacle are trialling four weekends of short-form performance nights across the late Summer/Autumn of 2017, with a view to making an ongoing program viable into the future. To test the presentation format, they have commissioned four different independent artists and groups to curate the performance evenings in the 107 venue, in a variety of different ways.

Theatre Kantanka explore the limits of the cosmos in ReLoadKoori Gras by Moogahlin Performing Arts, Mod Productions and Tim Bishop opens up a GBLTQI, First People's context for Mardi Gras with art (Exhibition), food and conversation (Black Point) and cabaret (Black Nulla). Martin del Amo will stir our senses with experimental choreography and bodies in extremis in Let's Dance, and POST will reimagine our present, through the past in Contemporary Contemporary Contemporary.

The City of Sydney have come on board with the program through a cultural grant and their continuing support of 107 as a creative space. The partnership with Intimate Spectacle and 107 intends to foster a supportive, artist-led series of programs into the future, and reinforce the 107 venue as a key organisation for the support of local, experimental performance in Sydney.

We are asking you, the community of Sydney's artists, performers, friends and performance lovers, to chip in whatever you can to assist the production costs of each project... which are over $5000 per season. The funds directly support fees for artists and technical staff working on the program.

The first event kicks-off in February 2017, so we are running a short campaign with some great treats from local Redfern business-owners and establishments as rewards.
