On Tuesday, November 20, Pershing Middle School English teacher Neala Fogarty received a text message from her neighbor that her house was on fire. By the time she arrived, her home was engulfed in flames with her five pets inside.

Ms. Fogarty’s experience in education began over 20 years ago teaching at a private Catholic school where she was selected Who’s Who in Education. After eight years of teaching theology and coaching cheer, speech, and debate, she spent the best years of her career teaching reading, English Language Arts, and creative writing, where she adopted the motto “Until every child can read!” Ms. Fogarty loves teaching middle school, and when the opportunity arose to move to Pershing, she jumped at the chance! In addition to teaching ELA, she has also worked with dyslexic students to help them find success in reading.

Ms. Fogarty has been the anchor of her family during her husband’s recent battle with cancer while raising their theatre-loving daughter who is currently a senior in high school. When word of the fire made its way to the students at Pershing, one child reached out to his teacher and asked, “Why do bad things happen to the nicest people?” If you can help Ms. Fogarty’s family as we head into Thanksgiving and the holiday season, please donate here!
