As I searched my mind on how to create a successful fundraiser for my nephew Ernesto Gutierrez (Ernie), I prayed for a powerful and impactful delivery of his struggles; then I realized I only need to share his story…
Ernie is married to Azalia, has three beautiful girls (Alyssa, Aryel & Mandi). He is a hard-working man, a good husband and great father. He attends McAllen Sacred Heart church, serves in its choir, plus has taught vocation to twelfth graders for the past 17 years. He built his home on a strong faith foundation and his motto has always been “The Lord Always Provides”.
Having a 16 year old daughter go into the ICU for renal failure would be too much to bear for most of us. Well, Ernie’s daughter went into the hospital July 15th and was under the care of doctors for over a month and a half. She is home now, but continues to need dialysis every night while she sleeps. Ernie’s daughter was one month into her hospital stay, when Ernie himself was also admitted for surgery. His eye retina had detached! Dealing with a daughter getting dialysis, and fearing the worst when it came to his eye (his only good eye) is not an easy pill to swallow. Thankfully doctors were able to reattach his retina successfully.
Ernie is a diabetic, works in construction, and due to climbing up and down ladders developed an ulcer on his foot which rapidly became infected. On November 25th, Ernie was again admitted into the hospital – the infection was so severe that the doctors planned an amputation below his knee. GOD works in mysterious ways indeed because on November 26th, Thanksgiving Day, Ernie had chest pain and extreme high blood pressure. The doctors cancelled the leg amputation plans to focus on his heart. They ran all kinds of tests, but as time went by and results came in they found nothing. His blood pressure and sugar levels were stabilized and the medicines being given for the foot infection were working. God knew all along that the meds to heal the foot to avoid an amputation would start working if only given time! – so time he got through amazing grace from above. On December 18th, Ernie went into surgery for the foot ulcer, NO amputation, and again his faith, stronger than ever, proved to him that “The Lord Always Provides”. As of today, he continues his recovery in the hospital.
This man has touched so many family members and friends with how he has handled adversity, remaining positive in the midst of all negatives, and more than anything believing in a stronger power, which carries him throughout all his trials and tribulations. He celebrated Thanksgiving, his wedding anniversary, Christmas, his birthday and New Year’s in the hospital.
He gives glory to God, and is ever so thankful for his wife Azalia, who has also carried the heavy cross all these months. She is the only one working and spends her spare time caring for both her daughter and husband.
In construction, when you work you get paid and when you do not, you do not get paid. Please help us help Ernie with his financial dilemma. Please donate today, pass the word, and share with your friends and family; also continue to keep him in your prayers so that Ernie may recover soon and get back to the business of contributing to his family, friends, community, and church… Thank you, and may the Lord Always Provide for you and your family.
