On September 6, Rachel and Andrew rushed their beautiful, six-month-old daughter Francesca to the hospital where they learned she needed emergency surgery to drain excess fluid from her brain, which was blocked by a brain tumor.
In the days following, Francesca was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive metastatic brain tumor known as ATRT. Fewer than 70 new cases, occurring almost entirely in children, are diagnosed each year. Given the rarity of this tumor, there are only a handful of experts on treating it.
One of the protocols for this disease was developed at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and Andrew and Rachel have decided to move there for Francesca’s immediate treatment. She will require surgery and many months of intense chemotherapy in the hospital.
The outpouring of love and support for the Kaczynski family from friends, relatives and strangers during this time has been greatly appreciated, and many of you have asked, “How can I help?”
We started this page for anyone looking to support the Kaczynski family. Your contribution will go toward travel, living and housing expenses, as well as any out-of-pocket medical bills and costs associated with Francesca’s treatment.
Right now, Francesca is recovering from her surgeries for her biopsy and drain and doing things like sitting up and eating solid food that she had never done before.
Dana Farber is the best institution in the country to treat this rare type of pediatric cancer and the hope is that moving to Boston represents the best treatment possible and Francesca’s best chance.
All money that isn’t spent on treatment-related expenses will be donated to pediatric cancer research.
