Niles District Library (MI) has received a very generous donation of $25,000 from the Huizenga Family Foundation to go towards the purchase of new furniture and equipment for our children's department in 2017. Our GoFundMe goal is to raise an additional $10,000.
Like most libraries, NDL has seen costs increase faster than revenues. Staffing levels have been pared back as a result. Despite our financial challenges, NDL won the 2015 Michigan State Librarian’s Excellence Award and the 2015 Four Flags Chamber of Commerce’s Service Organization of the Year.
Each year we have over 130,000 visitors come through our doors; we offer about 700 programs for children with annual attendance of more than 15,000. We love to see all those little people in the children’s department, but they result in a lot of wear and tear on the furnishings.

The type of fun, kid-friendly furniture we want.
We want to equip the children’s department with kid friendly furnishings and intriguing learning opportunities that make our visitors want to come to our library again and again. For most organizations building upkeep and furnishings is considered overhead. The library sees our building as an important service to our community. We strive to keep the library clean and to make it a welcoming, even inspiring place for the public.
The flexible-use tables we need to accommodate the variety of activities we have in the children's department.
Currently, most of the furnishings in the children’s department are close to twenty years old. Some of the tables have wobbly legs and some of the chairs are mismatched. We used gift funds to remodel the adjacent teen area in 2015 with bright vibrant colors and funky new furnishings. This left the children’s department looking dull and dated in comparison.
Niles District Library (NDL) is building a community of life-long learners who want to make Niles their life-long home. We offer guidance to resources, as well as free programs and classes that inform, entertain and enrich. We are committed to providing over-the-top customer service.
