Help Mikey Get Back on His Feet
For more than 20 years, my friend Mikey has been fighting a battle that most people never see. Because of significant disabilities and an inconsistent Social Security disability benefit, he has spent much of his adult life struggling with housing insecurity and periods of homelessness.
Mikey lost his parents when he was young and has largely had to navigate life on his own ever since. Despite that, he has always tried to stay positive and help others whenever he can. Around our community, he has picked up small odd jobs over the years—doing whatever work he is physically able to do—just to earn enough cash to survive day to day.
For many years, Mikey’s car was the only stability he had. It served as transportation to doctor appointments and physical therapy, and at times it was even his place to sleep. Unfortunately, about a year and a half ago, his car was impounded due to expired insurance and registration, leaving him without transportation and making it even harder to manage basic necessities.
Over the past year and a half, we’ve been fortunate to be able to help Mikey with a place to stay and support in a few other areas while he works through these challenges. A few other friends in the community have also stepped in where they can—offering small odd jobs, rides, and other acts of kindness to help him get by. That support has made a real difference, but we’re hoping this effort can provide a more stable step forward for him.
We have recently made some progress helping him get food assistance and medical insurance restored through the state, but the process to reinstate his Social Security disability benefits is extremely slow and may take another year before it is resolved.
Right now, the most immediate way we can help Mikey regain some stability is by getting him reliable transportation again.
Our goal is to raise funds to help purchase a modest vehicle and cover 12 months of insurance so Mikey can:
Attend physical therapy and medical appointments
Travel to essential services and support programs
Pick up small jobs he is able to do
Have a basic sense of independence and security again
Mikey is 42 years old and has spent most of his adult life simply trying to survive. He is a genuinely kind person who has always tried to contribute where he can despite difficult circumstances.
Even a small contribution would help restore a sense of stability in his life and give him the ability to access the care and resources he needs while he waits for his disability benefits to be reinstated.
Fundraising Goal: $9,000
To help Mikey regain stability and access to medical care, the funds will be used for the following:
Used Vehicle Purchase – $4,500
A reliable older vehicle so Mikey can travel to medical appointments, physical therapy, and essential services.
Insurance (12 months) – $1,800
Coverage so he can legally drive and keep the vehicle on the road.
Registration, Plates, Taxes – $700
Required costs to legally register the vehicle.
Initial Maintenance / Repairs – $1,000
Basic work that often comes with used vehicles such as tires, fluids, or small repairs.
Gas for Medical & Therapy Appointments – $400 Fuel to make sure he can consistently attend doctor visits and physical therapy.
Basic Stability Needs – $600
Occasional motel nights during extreme weather and the ability to use a laundromat so he can stay clean and maintain dignity while getting back on his feet.
Total Goal: $9,000
Every dollar will go directly toward helping Mikey regain transportation, access medical care, and maintain some basic stability while we work through the long process of reinstating his Social Security disability benefits.
If you’re unable to donate, sharing this campaign would mean just as much.
Thank you for taking the time to read Mikey’s story and for any support you are able to give.
