Two North Carolina State Bureau of  Investigation (NC SBI) Bomb Squad agents were severely injured in an explosion while they were working at a crime scene in Sampson County on July 26, 2019.  Agents Timothy Luper and Brian Joy had been called in after Sampson County deputies found homemade bombs and bomb-making materials in a search after a traffic stop. The explosion happened as the agents were working to dispose of dangerous materials found at the suspect's home.

Injuries included second and third-degree burns so the agents were hospitalized at the burn center in Chapel Hill, NC.  Both men will require surgeries and extensive time in the hospital.  Funding is sought to assist their families with the expenses of travel, meals, and lodging as they spend the coming weeks supporting the injured agents.

This need is urgent and ongoing.  At this time it is unknown how long the agents will be hospitalized.

I’m writing this update to thank all who have given so generously and to explain how the money collected via this GoFundMe account will be distributed.

The Luper and Joy families are extremely appreciative and have found great strength in your overwhelming show of love and support. This account was created five days ago to help those families during a time of crisis. They did not ask for this but were made aware of it right away and have since been kept informed of all financial details. They are grateful for the monetary support but also deeply touched by the personal comments, encouragement, and notes about prayers for Tim and Brian.

Effective tonight, August 2, 2019, the donation feature on this page will be disabled meaning that no more funds will be accepted in this account. I will leave the page up for those who want to look back at it for any reason.

As I explained above, this account was created to provide immediate support to both families during a time of crisis, it was not intended as a long-term means of soliciting donations.

All money collected to date will be divided equally between the Luper and Joy families to use as they see fit during the coming months of recovery. Should further needs arise for either family those will be addressed on an individual basis.
