Michigan Volunteers Making Masks for COVID-19

4M: Mid-Michigan Mask Makers is a grassroots charity, formed out of the immediate need for protective masks that has arisen out of the COVID-19 crisis. We currently have nearly 300 volunteers and have donated thousands of homemade masks to a variety of healthcare organizations and other groups. We have many requests coming in, but mostly serve the mid-Michigan area (especially Saginaw, Bay City and Midland counties).


One of our favorite sayings is "every person who sews has always known that one day their basement stash of material would save the world", and originally the plan was just to bring people together to make that a reality.  However, we have found that we are even more useful acting more like the "hub of the wheel" (as we call it), by organizing volunteers, soliciting and distributing materials to volunteers, as well as organizing drop-offs at the health facilities that are in need. 


One of our main missions is to make sure that the smaller healthcare organizations are not overlooked. We have donated hundreds of masks to Covenant, McLaren, etc., but we are increasingly reaching out to home healthcare workers, nursing homes and contract workers who perhaps have even fewer resources available than do the larger organizations.
