Tim (Rehling) Sexton Cancer Fund

On February 16th, 2021 Tim was diagnosed with stage 4 gastroesophageal cancer.

Due to the location of the tumor, this diagnosis took some investigating. What initially caused a trip to the ER on December 30th, 2020 was an extremely low hemoglobin count (4.9 when the standard range is 14 - 18). After a blood transfusion of 3 units during his overnight stay and a multitude of tests including CT scan, abdominal ultrasound and MRI, all that was found was a growth on the liver which, based on the MRI, they concluded at the time was benign. However, there was no explanation as to why Tim had lost so much blood. A colonoscopy and endoscopy were scheduled and from the endoscopy, they found the tumor at the junction of his esophagus and stomach, which was also ulcerated and accounted for the blood loss. A few weeks later, a liver biopsy confirmed that the growth they originally thought was benign was in fact malignant.

The path forward looked challenging for both Tim and his wife Nancy, but after giving themselves a day to be angry, cry and let their emotions take center stage, they resolved to shift their energy towards positivity, moving forward and doing all they could to get Tim healthy again so they can return to their normal life together.

At 42 years old, cancer is not something that many of us are closely familiar with.  Questions arise that fill your days and suddenly the pandemic and political jokes become something you miss.  Almost.  What are the treatment options?  What are the side effects?  Do second opinions matter?  Can I travel again?  Will my hair fall out?  What if I should be doing something different?  How did this even happen?  All of your decisions take on new seriousness.  And all of your past concerns become unimportant.

Tim is currently receiving treatment through Kaiser Permanente.  But even with medical coverage, there are many out-of-pocket expenses that arise.  Additionally, on the day of his first chemo treatment it was his last day at Warner Brothers, and with no new job in sight, finances are tight and his future medical insurance is not guaranteed.  Cancer is expensive.  No matter what your financial situation is.  With Tim treating his cancer full-time and Nancy becoming his advocate, nurse, dietitian, on top of her normal job as friend, wife and small business owner, this has put a large time constraint and financial burden on them.

There are so many expenses associated with cancer, but here are a few of the expenses that your donation will contribute to: office visits, clinic visits, lab tests, procedures, imaging tests, drug costs, hospital stays, surgeon expenses, specialist referrals, transportation costs, and rehabilitation.  Some non-medical expenses, which can certainly be just as important, might include: food costs as they are now on a strict vegan diet, new clothes since he has already lost more than a few pounds, anything that can help with comfort at home where he’ll spend the majority of the next 6-8 months and the much needed distraction of entertainment.

**Kim (Deziel) Offenberg set up this GoFundMe account on behalf of Tim Sexton.  The account is under Tim's name so all emails will come from him.

I set up this GoFundMe to provide support for Tim and Nancy.  I have known Tim for almost 20 years.  We started out as roommates but he became like a brother to me - family by choice.  When I think of Tim I think of big smiles and bigger hugs.  He is kind, sincere, thoughtful, welcoming, creative and genuine.  Some people just make you smile when you see them - that is Tim.  His presence and positive energy warms up the room.  He has always been a supportive friend and now it is our turn to support him.

Please join me in donating to Tim’s cancer fund, and providing Tim and Nancy with as much love, positive energy, and support as we can.  Any amount is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use!  We will provide updates as much as we can.  Thank you, thank you!
