Toney Marvin Holstein passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on March 9, 2025, at Medilodge of Greenview in Alpena, MI. He was born on December 28, 1944, in Ashford, WV to the late Herman and Helen (Means) Holstein.
Toney was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He was well-known for his fishing expertise and could often be found alongside the river near the 9th street bridge and on Rotary Island. Toney made many friends and was once featured in the local newspaper due to his fishing knowledge and incredibly friendly personality. He was loved immensely by all of the people who were blessed to have known him. He will be missed dearly, and his memory will never be forgotten as he will live on in the hearts of those he has influenced and guided. Toney was an amazing father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and dear friend. He was an incredibly selfless and generous person with a beautiful sense of humor.
Toney was married to his late wife, Shirley, 52 years before her passing in 2019. During the years before Shirley passed, they were regular booth operators at the Alpena Indoor Flea Market where they sold Shirley's hand-stitched quilts and other creations. Toney was always right by Shirley's side sipping a coffee or taking a nap when he wasn't roaming about chatting with other vendors and customers. He loved to collect coins and the brightest flashlights that he could find while thrifting. But aside from fishing he loved to watch western movies and scratch off lottery tickets with the hopes of winning a lot of money to go to the casino.
Toney worked for Brach's Candies where he met his late wife, Shirley, in Chicago, IL and he also worked alongside the Chicago Police Department. He received several decorated certificates from The Chicago Police Department for his bravery and was very proud of his time serving his community before relocating to Alpena, MI.
He is survived by his children: James Holstein (Elizabeth), Steven Holstein (Shelly), and Rose Cullison. 5 grandchildren, Amber (Joshua), Alexander, Britany, Abigayle, and Alyssa. Two great grandchildren, Isaac and Madeline. He is survived by siblings: Julia Adkins (Gary), Danny Holstein (Betty), Arlene Holstein, Pamela Holstein, Iva Stanley (Kelly), Aaron Holstein, Barbara Roberts, Jennings Holstein, Rex Holstein, Ray Holstein, Laura Lovejoy (Dennis), Reyna Pozzie (David).
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Holstein (Lytle) and brother Marcel Holstein.
Visitation will take place Thursday at Bannan Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 12 p.m. with Pastor Mike Potter officiating. Interment: Sanborn Township Cemetery
