My name is Dulce, and I’m writing on behalf of my partner, Brad, and our family. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for holding space for us during a time we never imagined facing.

Brad is the kind of person who shows up without being asked. He’s the friend people call when they need help, the neighbor who steps in without hesitation, and a father who lights up when he talks about his kids. In our blended family, Brad is the glue and the compass. His humor, warmth, and strength hold us together and make everyday life feel lighter just by having him in it.

In an instant, everything changed.

Brad suffered a sudden and severe hemorrhagic stroke and required emergency brain surgery (a craniotomy) to save his life. The days that followed were terrifying and uncertain. We didn’t know if he would wake up or recognize the people he loves most. When Brad did wake up, he was unable to speak and had weakness on his right side. Doctors have explained that recovery from this type of stroke is long and complex, and requires extensive rehabilitation.

Right now, progress comes in small but meaningful moments. He has light in his eyes, smiles when he sees us, and holds our hands and faces with the same love as before. He’s still here — still Brad — and slowly finding his way back to us.

For the first time, the man who has always carried so much for others is the one who needs support. Our home feels quieter and heavier without him. Our children deeply miss his guidance, leadership, and presence.

Because this medical emergency was sudden and unexpected, Brad is unable to work for the foreseeable future and does not have paid medical leave or short-term disability. While a small amount of paid time off is being used, there is no ongoing income. At the same time, everyday expenses continue — including the mortgage, utilities, medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and basic household needs.

I am caring for Brad daily, coordinating closely with his medical team, and preparing to take on his care as he continues rehabilitation. We created this GoFundMe to help support Brad and our family during this incredibly difficult time.
