Dear students, teachers, friends, family -
I am writing this on behalf on my parents, Colleen & Joe.
As you may or may not know, Joe has diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes leads to high blood sugar levels, which can damage organs, blood vessels and nerves.
Over the years, Joe's sugar levels have been regulated, but as you get older - it is not so easy to maintain, and the medication gets quite expensive. My mom, Colleen is self employed, and Joe (under his contracts) has no medical insurance at all. They both pay for all medical bills and expenses 100% out of pocket. This past weekend, Joe was admitted to the hospital for serious issues relating to his diabetes. He will be staying until mid week this week until the doctors can get him regulated. Going forward, he will have to adhere to strict medications, frequent visits to doctors and specialists, and is advised to buy a scooter to help with ease of transportation.
Joe has impacted students for decades, teaching and writing percussion and music for bands across the state and country. He is so dedicated to all the students & so proud to watch them grow and graduate over the years. It is important for him to be in good physical health to be able to get right back to practice for the kids (and for his mental sanity, ha!).
Why a GoFundMe?
I started this GoFundMe to assist in providing everything Joe needs. As we all know, the equipment and specialists, etc. get extremely expensive - especially with no coverage at all. My parents would never ask for help, but truly, at this time, they could use all the support they can get.
How Can You Help?
There are a few ways you can help out!
Donate: You can use the GoFundMe page and donate. I have listed the financial goal for $5,599, which is the price of the scooter that Joe will be buzzing around on. However, obviously, any amount at all is appreciated. The funds will go towards the medication, specialists and medical equipment (scooter) Joe needs for recovery.
Referral: My mom, Colleen, is a Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Royal Oak. If you are buying, selling, looking into the market - any referral to her would be a great way to help! Keep her busy!
Music/Percussion: Joe has extensive experience writing music, and teaching lessons. As many of his and students & percussionists can attest, he is great at his job. If you know of any music programs looking for someone to write their percussion book - Joe is your man!
As I said previously, my parents would never ask themselves - but I think there are people out there that would be touched, and happy to help. They will be so thankful (as will Tarik & I) for every referral, donation and kind word. Praying for Joey's speedy recovery and a healthy future!
