Hey friends, family and followers, this is Michael W. Twitty, your guide through the history and legacy of Africana foodways the world over and in the American South. (www.Afroculinaria.com) In my 41st year on earth it's time to finally make the trip of a lifetime to West Africa, the source of soul food. I have tested my DNA and I am hoping to reverse the Middle Passage and go to Senegal, one of several countries in the region where I have deep genetic roots, in this case among the Serer people. I hope to visit with www.RootstoGlory.com, a tour group that takes DNA tested African Americans on heritage visits to their ancestral homelands. This trip represents a full circle return after years and years of research, to discover first hand the food traditions that shaped so much of early Southern cooking.
I cannot tell you how much it will mean for me to see for myself the Door of No Return where my Ancestors left Senegal nearly 300 years ago, or to cook with my cousins, visit the rice fields, make pink salt, talk with people in the markets and watch the fishing boats come in. After completing my first major book for HarperCollins, The Cooking Gene, this experience I hope will add greater depth to my work and give me the opportunity to shed light on the great things the Continent has to share with Afro-Diasporans looking to visit their homelands and for all people looking to understand our collective debt to African civilizations. This journey, which I hope you will support me in taking will be a dream come true.
