**It takes a village. Thank you so much for all of your generous donations and for supporting this wonderful island family. This fundraiser exceeded its goal, thanks so this amazing island community!**
Naya Bullock, from Orcas Island, needs our community's support! Let's ensure that this wonderful island family is not consumed by the burdensome weight of dental bills.
What happened? This fall, while on a multi-day hike in the North Cascades with Spring Street International School, Naya fell and landed on a jagged branch. Naya broke her jaw in 3 places. Two brakes were on her jaw hinges and one of them was shattered. The third break was left of center on her chin. She also had a tree branch that punctured through her chin, under her tongue. She fractured and chipped most of her adult teeth and broke 3 beyond repair. She also sustained neck trauma.
Naya needed immediate surgery to realign and hold the jaw in place and extract the 3 shattered teeth as well as stitch under her chin to close up the puncture wound. After the surgery her jaws were wired shut with medical braces - which are metal plates screwed through your gums to the jaw bone. She wore this for 6 weeks, during which she was only able to eat liquids through a straw. After the braces came off she had weekly visits at a dentist to stabilize her broken teeth and exposed nerves. This took another 6 weeks where she could only eat soft foods that did not require any chewing.

During this time she started weekly appointments with a chiropractor to work on her neck and a cranial sacral therapist to help her regain her jaw mobility. It's been 3.5 months after the accident, and Naya is still having trouble chewing because of her misaligned bite and general pain.
To work on correcting her bite she now wears orthodontic braces that she will have to wear for over 2 years. After that she will need more dental work including 3 crowns and 3 implants and general tooth reconstruction. Naya has missed about 3 weeks of school so far, and the pain she continues to have causes her to have trouble focusing for longer periods of time.
Her "full" recovery is estimated to take up to 3 to 4 years.
*Unfortunately, urgent dental care is treated differently than accidental healthcare and both Naya's personal insurance and the school's insurance have covered very little or nothing at all.
Naya's costs include:
Orthodontics - $7,000
Implants - $ 10,000
Dental work - $ 8,000
Neck/Jaw Therapy - $1,000
Regular off-island transportation - $1,000
Total : $27,000
*A Medical Fund Bank Account has been opened with Islanders Bank (https://www.islandersbank.com) under Maria and Doug Bullock's name. The account number ends in: #3310.
