National Youth Leadership Foundation STEM Camp

Our 12-year old son, Zachary Nathaniel Austin, is one of those children nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum. Zachary has always aspired to receive and appointment and attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has continued his motivation by standing out with fellow students and aspiring to be his best, in academics, sports, and school leadership roles. Zachary was chosen to attend the State of Wyoming’s KEYS program last year and was honored again this year by being awarded a recommendation to attend the National Youth Leadership Foundations camp being held at Denver University, where he will have an opportunity to learn from active NASA Astronauts in the fields of S.T.E.M. He is excited about this opportunity as he feels it will assist him in continuing his academic endeavor as a Cadet with an appointment at USMA in his near future.
Many Middle School, High School and College S.T.E.M.-stars, like Zachary, will spend 6 days this summer building their future! S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Children accepted in this program have already shown an ability to excel in these four disciplines. Now they have a chance to focus their energies on which or how many of the disciplines they would like to explore for their life's work. For six days they will learn and brainstorm ideas and come up with strategies that could assist the United States in the colonization of Mars. He will join other high-achieving students from around the country for an extraordinary opportunity to get real hands-on experience, hone their leadership skills, and kick-start their futures.
Zachary's aim in life is to continue learning by serving his Country. His aspirations are to be an officer in the US Army by earning an engineering degree at USMA. He would also like to become an astronaut through his military experiences. S.T.E.M. has been a part of our dinner conversations since he’s been old enough to talk. He enjoys factual and informative writings and is always seeking to learn more. Zachary has been complimented by his teachers on numerous occasions by being helpful in tutoring his fellow students on topics they seem to struggle with, many times with a perspective the teacher has stated, “they never thought of”.
Zachary has always had a natural leadership ability yet understands his diplomatic approach to successful team building. Zachary has continued to broaden his experiences throughout life by competing on multiple levels of sports. He rode bulls during the 2018 rodeo circuit in Wyoming, competing in locations throughout Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. He plays football and basketball for the Burns Elementary School. He competed on a youth level for the Lifetime Sports Swim Team.
Zachary reads for hours on his personal time, while assisting his parents with household chores. He has made the Honor Roll every semester and has been selected as Student of the Month on numerous occasions.
Zachary has a vibrant imagination; finishes every project, without any prodding from the adults in his life, and always before the deadline. Zachary never misses a homework assignment and is always available to help his friends out. He is a good “downhome” well rounded regular kid who has big aspirations he is willing to work hard for.
We are all thrilled, but we cannot pay for the costs involved all by ourselves. Zachary is pledging that any monies raised over his camp tuition need, will be donated to evenly between two charities; Hunting for Heroes (a Wyoming Charity) where it’s their mission to give back to our nation’s disabled veterans by honoring them with unique hunting, fishing and other outdoor experiences. They offer a progressive healing environment where disabled veterans are welcome and supported – a community where they can discover hope again, no matter what battles they continue to fight physically or emotionally, and the Disabled American Veterans whose mission is to assist veterans who took the oath to protect us and we promised them a lifetime of support. He's rare and special young man and feels he has been put here for a purpose.
The gift of this “adventure” will continue Zachary's path to greatness. Please help us help him obtain and achieve his goals.
