National History Day 2019 Reach of Henrietta Lacks

Donation protected
Hello, we are Amelia and Jocelyn, also known as the “Science Girls”!  We are trying to raise money to attend the National History Day competition in Washington DC from June 9-13, 2019.

In March we competed in the regional National History Day competition against other students in our district with our history research project on “The Modern Reach of Henrietta Lacks”, and were awarded “Outstanding Projects Featuring Medical History”.  We were also one of three group performances to advance to the State level competition.  Last Friday, we put on our lab coats once again and performed in front of state judges, and were interviewed on our research.  To our amazement and surprise, our names were called in the award ceremony and we will be one of two performing groups to represent the great state of Utah in the National History Day competition in Washington D.C.! This competition is just one month away, and airfare for our team is going to cost $2500, plus the cost needed for hotel, food and transportation.

While winning this competition is a huge honor, we have to raise enough money to travel and stay in D.C. for the week long competition. Neither the school, nor the district is able to help us with the funds or fundraising.  Please help us share this amazing project at a national level, and support us on our National History Day adventure. We really love our community, and give a huge shout out to our teachers and school for providing such amazing support!

Here is a little about our project that is themed on “Triumph and Tragedy in History”:

Henrietta Lacks was a poor black woman in the early 1900’s. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 30 at the John Hopkins hospital, a free hospital for blacks.  During her first treatments, samples were taken of her cancer tissue without her knowledge to be cultured.  Her cancer cells miraculously never died. These cells have gone on to make every medical breakthrough in the past 60 years possible! Everyone today has been influenced by Henrietta Lacks cells.

Please donate and help us take this project to the National History Day in June. Thank you so much!
