Nathan's Wheelie Big Adventure

Hello, my name is Nathan Goodwin.

A bit about me!
Since birth, I have had quadriplegic cerebral palsy. It means all four of my limbs are affected, impacting my mobility, caused by poor balance and co-ordination. I can walk very short distances unaided but need constant supervision. I require regular breaks when walking as even with my walking frame, I can become tired quickly. My disability often makes it difficult for me to do many of the things most people take for granted.

But that doesn’t stop me!!
I have always been determined not to let my cerebral palsy stop me from doing things I enjoy, such as athletics, scouting, visiting the theatre, and participating in creative performances and theatre workshops.
I am an active member of the scout association, volunteering at a cub pack as a young leader and participating in numerous camps and outdoor adventures. Despite the odds, I achieved my Chief Scout Gold Award after completing a 20km hiking expedition spread over two days. More recently, I was awarded the Chief Scout Commendation for Meritorious Conduct, attending The Scout St Georges Day of Celebration and Achievement at Windsor Castle, where I met one of my heroes, Bear Grylls, our Chief Scout.
However, not even I could have dreamt that my infectious enthusiasm and passion would lead to me being picked to attend the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea 2023. I am incredibly proud that I am representing my scout county, Greater London North, particularly as I am the first scout with my disability to attend as part of the main contingent. From attending the Jamboree, I am laying the foundations for other disabled scouts to embark on international adventures, fulfilling their own hopes and dreams. This, I believe, is my legacy.

So why am I fundraising?
I am working hard to fundraise for my epic international adventure at the world jamboree. I need to raise £4,100 to attend, with around two-thirds of this being used to support other young people from less affluent countries to participate in this adventure of a lifetime.
To gain maximum benefit from my jamboree adventure, I have furthered the challenge to fundraise £16,000 for an electric all-terrain wheelchair. My current wheelchair is unsuited for the jamboree needs. I struggle to propel myself, and with a lack of coordination and arm strength, it limits my independence.
Participation in many of the adventurous and outdoor activities I love is becoming progressively more difficult and challenging not only for myself but also for those who need to push and support me. Having an all-terrain electric wheelchair would enable me to become increasingly independent, with greater access not only to my exciting Jamboree Adventure, but also all the activities that bring so much joy and value to my life.

What am I doing to raise money?
From January 2022 through to July 2023, I shall be fundraising in a variety of ways, from running cake sales, being part of quiz nights, bag packing and selling sweets and other homemade items. I am also selling many personal items I no longer use.
I have been part of a cake sale for St. George's Day. I hope to do more of this by organising a tea party for the parents of the cub pack I volunteer at.
I am also working with my jamboree contingent to provide central catering for many young people and their leaders attending North London Scouts District camp in June.
The most challenging fund-raising event for me is a 10-mile sponsored hike along the River Lea, which will take a lot of wheel-power and energy for me to complete.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their kind thoughts and support, enabling me to reach my target.
Nathan.
