Statement
As many of you know, before anything else I am first and foremost a Christian and it has come to that time of year where we as followers of Jesus look towards the weeks building up to His death and resurrection.
In the modern day, Lent is seen as an annual event where Christians across the world are prompted to give something up in their journey in faith. Last year, however, I saw it as an opportunity to bless the homeless of Southampton, and I was so humbled to see how well the fundraiser did last year. My mate Oscar and I were able to go through the city, distributing Gospels, snacks, and praying for people.
Plan
Though I have always had a heart for the poor, it was particularly moved for the homeless in Southampton when on a walk to church one Sunday evening. On that walk I saw two groups of homeless people in quick succession, and it broke my heart. It is something that has been on my heart to do for a while now and I feel called by God to use my financial situation to help those most in need in the city.
With the £160+ that was raised last Lent, Oscar and I were able to bless over 25 homeless people, not to mention the countless people who were simply interested in what we were doing, which was amazing!
Where will the money go?
Like last year, my plan is to raise the money and spend it directly on similar resources to last year - non-perishable snacks, body wipes, sanitary products, and Gospels!
How will it work?
Alongside the generous donations from you guys, I’m also planning to go for runs with different people over the month and a half that Lent lasts for. Then, whatever distance is achieved within the fixed 30mins that I run with each person, I will personally match with a donation-equivalent of the distance (e.g. if we run 6.45km, I’ll donate £6.45). Anyone is welcome to go for a run with me, just drop me a message if you’re interested!
How much money needs to be raised?
I have set the target at £250, however, my primary aim is to help at least 30 homeless people get access to the following resources:
Hygiene kits
Sanitary products
Non-perishable snacks & drinks
Gospels
Closing statement
Whether you are a Christian, belong to a different religion or aren't religious at all, I believe that we are all called to help those around us, regardless of background. What we are doing might seem like such a small thing, in one city, in a world full of those in need, but this goes beyond that - it is an opportunity for us to action those prayers of peace that we long to see come to fruition.
Bible inspirations
Matthew 25:40 - "anything you did for any of My people here, you did for Me"
Mark 10:21-22 - "Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, 'One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.' But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions."
