Nathan's Amputation Fund

My name is Nathan Tinker, when I was one-year old I broke my leg and was diagnosed with pseudathrosis of the tibia and fibula. This condition causes the bone to be spongy, weak, and deformed.  In my case, the tibia bowed the farther down you went and I was missing a large portion of my fibula. After many failed surgeries to correct and heal my left leg my family was left with the difficult decision of either another surgery, an experimental procedure that had a 50% chance of causing cancer, or an amputation. I had leg length discrepancy which means my left leg was 4 inches shorter than my right and much frailer.  Even if the surgery managed to stabilize my tibia, I would have had to have gone through years of leg and foot lengthening operations. My family chose amputation as it had the highest chance of success and the least amount of surgeries in the future. I first had a Symes amputation, which is where they remove the foot and flip the heel up and sew it on. The foot bones are then used to stabilize and repair the broken area. Unfortunately, the first amputation did not correct the area to the extent the doctors hoped for and so I had to have a second amputation. A few years after the second amputation, I had to have a removal of bone spurs that had formed on the end of my residual limb. I now have more bone spurs on the residual limb and have to have them removed as well as having the damaged tissue reshaped and removed. Walking is currently a pain, wearing my prosthetic causes internal bleeding and internal scarring as well. , I cannot go more than a short distance before needing to stop for 15 minutes to rest and allow the pain to subside. I need help covering the costs of this procedure and the costs of a new prosthetic. This surgery will cost thirty thousand dollars and a prosthetic is between ten and fifteen thousand dollars. Insurance will cover a portion of these costs but my out of pocket costs are still in the thousands of dollars. I will be having my surgery in June 2017 at City of Hope in California. I will have a 6-10 week recovery time and another month at least to be fitted for a new prosthetic. I greatly appreciate any contributions and prayers. Thank you
