In 2020, Nathan was diagnosed with statin-induced necrotizing autoimmune myopathy—a rare but devastating side effect of the cholesterol medication Lipitor. This disease causes his immune system to attack and destroy his muscles. There is no cure, but treatments can help slow progression and manage symptoms.

Nathan’s care now includes ongoing immunosuppressant medications, regular hospital infusions, and a home nurse who administers medications over the course of one week each month. These treatments help keep him functioning and, most importantly, allow him to feel relatively well despite what his test numbers sometimes show.

We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding team at UAB Rheumatology, including Dr. Andrews, who specializes in myopathies and has recently joined his care team. Even though Nathan’s lab results—particularly his CK levels, which indicate muscle inflammation and damage—often come back higher than we’d like, he manages remarkably well day to day. We feel blessed that he can stay active, engaged, and optimistic.

Unfortunately, Nathan is no longer able to work full-time due to the need to regularly receive treatments. The lack of a full-time job, combined with frequent medical interventions, has created a significant financial burden for our family.

Through it all, we have been humbled by the love, prayers, and generosity we’ve received. Your support has helped us cover medical expenses, stay on top of treatments, and keep moving forward with hope.
