Nathan Espitallier Recovery Fund

On January 15, 2018 Nate Espitallier was in a motorbike accident in Thailand where he sustained critical neck, spinal, and facial injuries including fractures in the C5 and C6 vertebrae of his neck. A spinal cord contusion located between C6 and C7 is causing his current state of paralysis. He also has multiple fractures at the T9 level, but these fractures are stable.

Since the fractures are stable, the medical team caring for Nate has recommended not doing surgery at this time so that his body can continue focusing on recovering, which will provide a better chance for his spinal cord to heal. In 2-3 weeks, he will need surgery and care related to the broken bones in his jaw, cheek, and orbital on the right side of his face.

We are all anxious for him to come home but he needs time and care to stabilize his injuries. Eventually, his mom and sister will meet with an aviation consultant to determine when and how Nate will come home. The consultant will work with Nate’s team of medical specialists to determine how he’ll fly and when it is safe for him to do so.

The level of medical care he is receiving in Thailand is outstanding. Unfortunately, the doctors cannot give us certainty if Nate will heal completely, but we do know that he has a long road to recovery ahead. Money raised via this GoFundMe will be used to fund expenses related to transitioning Nate throughout his recovery.

Please feel free to use this platform to donate, and most importantly please continue to send love, prayers, and positive energy to Nate.

Because of how recent the accident happened, we still have limited information about the extent of his injuries and recovery time. Updates will be posted on this GoFundMe page periodically, but if you have questions or want to send well-wishes to Nate, please reach out to his cousin Katie Beermann via Facebook message or through email at [email redacted]. She is happy to answer any questions about his condition or the GoFundMe that you may have and will be forwarding your kind messages to Nate as he recovers.

We ask at this time that you DO NOT reach out to Nate directly—we want all of his energy focused on getting better.
