As many are aware, I had stated in September that I'm going through a pretty hard time at this point of my life. I'm at End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). It is the fifth and final stage of renal failure. My kidney function is continuing on its trend of decline. I have been referred for a kidney transplant and dialysis.
Fairly soon I will be expected to begin dialysis. I want everyone to know that it is an expected step on the path to finding and receiving a viable transplant. It is a treatment process that typically occurs three times a week, for hours per session. Once a patient begins dialysis, it is continued for life or until a successful transplant is made. Failure to receive dialysis is fatal.
I have benefited greatly from a great network of love and generosity these last few months. And in truth I've actually had a lifetime of wonderful support and friendships from all around. I am currently very thankful that the insurance policy in place is holding and helping immensely. But I'm bracing for a landslide of surplus costs and hurdles that I now face. Though I greatly prize my autonomy and independence, I refuse to let it stop me for asking for help. I have chosen, reluctantly, to begin this gofundme to help with the costs of medical services, medications, diet, and transit to my appointments. I'm hopeful that with your help we'll be able to fight this and share many more years in each other's company.
Thankfully,
- Nathan
