As many of you know, we’ve had a rough couple of years, first fighting PSC and then dealing with many life-threatening transplant complications. Nowadays, Nate’s health remains precarious, and the most likely outcome is that those complications will continue until his liver fails again. We aren’t giving up hope, but we are facing the reality that the time Nate has left is likely to be limited. We’ve dubbed this time “Nate’s Extra Innings
and we’re doing everything we can to spend it creating moments of joy and good memories.
In light of this prognosis, our amazing friends have convinced us that it’s time to open ourselves up to more help and that’s what this fund is about.
We’re incredibly fortunate to have awesome health insurance through Ann’s work, so our medical bills are mostly covered. But medicines for the soul - like short road trips, delicious meals, movie rentals, baseball tickets, plants for the garden - cost money too. And with Nate out of work for quite a while and Ann taking several extended unpaid outages, there isn’t a lot of extra money laying around right now to fund the “fun” in Nate’s extra innings.
This money would cover our rent through the end of the year, freeing up that $1600/month to spend in other ways.
We certainly hope that the doctors turn out to be wrong and that at the end of the year (and the next!… and the next!… and the next!…), Nate is doing well. But in the spirit of “hoping for the best and planning for the worst,” we also want to enjoy the time we have together right now. We are infinitely grateful to be surrounded by people interested in helping us do that.
