hello dear friends- I really didn't want to make one of these but it's become somewhat pressing! I'm getting a breast reduction April 10th. Unfortunately, although needing the surgery for multiple medically necessary reasons, my insurance won't cover ANYTHING. I have been needing this for many years, but have not been able to afford it.
I need this surgery for two reasons- I suffer from chronic pain as well as gender dysphoria related to my chest.
I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disease which causes me a lot of physical pain. I also have thyroid cancer & hashimotos (thyroid issues famously increase/create chronic pain...but that's a whole other story we don't need to get into.) For me, having large breasts and wearing a bra is excruciating and causes me more pain than anything else on a day to day basis. Unfortunately I cannot feel comfortable not wearing a bra due to this size of my chest. My insurance judges coverage for reductions based on the proportions between my chest and my body. Since my chest is large but not massive, and because I am not a particularly thin person, they have deemed my body as "proportional" and denied me coverage even though the pain I experience greatly impacts my quality of life.
Psychologically, I have been trying to come to terms with the size of my chest for my entire adult life but have come to accept that's just not going to happen as it is. As someone who identifies as being non-binary and gender fluid, my chest leaves me feeling trapped in a body that I can't relate to. My insurance does not cover breast reductions for gender dysphoria reasons, and only considers full top surgery for people who can prove they're medically transitioning to one side of the binary and to what insurance deems as "normal", only considering gender binaries.
Though both of these things have been medically documented by my doctors and therapist for years, it has done nothing to help me get coverage for this!
In desperation I went ahead and loaned money to make it happen, but I will be facing crushing amounts of interest if I don't pay for at least some of it off the bat. What I'm asking is not even half of what this surgery is going to cost me, but it will make a huge difference in my ability to deal with the debt.
