Hello! my name is Natasha Piner, I am a current 11th grader at East Carteret High School. As a student, I have found a great interest in classes such as Art and English. Classes such as these keep a sense of creativity alive in me every day. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone that for someone who loves being surrounded by the arts, I wouldn’t want to move forward with a career in these subjects. To help cater to what I exactly want to do in my future, I decided to apply to The School of The New York Times. The School of the New York Times is a summer academy run by The New York Times that allows students from all around the world to meet up in New York City and take an array of courses such as “DIY Filmmaking” and “Photojournalism as an art”. After working rigorously on my application over winter break, I found out last week that I was accepted under the course “Writing the Big City: Reporting in New York”. In this course, I will have the opportunity of a lifetime to work within The New York Times Building with journalists, and getting to write about the city in and out of the classroom, getting to explore the different boroughs of New York. Though I am very honored and excited to be accepted into a program with great prestige such as this, the cost of the trip is quite burdening to my mother and me. Overall the camp is $5,800; I have, however, received some money from financial aid that will help deduct the cost of the camp, but I still have to consider my flight to New York and pocket money. Right now I am hoping to raise $4,000 to help pay for my trip. I hope to be able to raise the money needed to send me to camp before June. Thank you for your consideration.
