Nasielsk Cemetery Restoration
Donation protected
During the holocaust, the Nazi party vandalized Jewish cemeteries and tore down the gravestones and used them as pavers for streets, where people would walk on them in their everyday lives. One such cemetery is in Nasielsk, Poland. For one week each year for three years, descendants of Jews from Nasielsk and residents volunteer to clear the area and help restore the Nasielsk Jewish cemetery. My family are descendants from Nasielsk and during last summer, we visted the cemetery there and did work to clear the woods and aid the restoration. We were able to place a temporary monument on the site, however we still have much more work to do.
We are looking to raise $40,000 to accomplish our goals of:
• Restoring the Nasielsk, Poland cemetery
•$5,000- Finish cleaning the site
• $10,000- Fencing
• Creating a memorial
• $5,000- Synagogue window reclamation
• $10,000- Memorial
• Educating local youths and adults about the vibrant Jewish community that once existed
• $10,000- Ongoing educational work
Our work will preserve and honor the memory of the generations of Jews that were buried in the cemetery since the 1800’s. It will also serve to educate the town about the history of the Jewish community in Nasielsk and to solicit their help in respecting and preserving the cemetery.
Many religions have customs around respecting the people who came before them, and the most honorable thing you can do is not forget them.
Any donation is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
