Nariah's Bone Marrow Transplant

Nariah Mondy born November 9, 2018

Hello, I have set up this GoFundme at the request of Sherresha Mondy (Mother to Nariah)

At just 6 weeks old, Sherresha noticed that Nariah was not eating or wetting diapers the way a normal infant should. When she was able to get anything down, she would throw it back up almost immediately. She was taken into the hospital where the initial thoughts were she was very dehydrated. They put an IV in her to give her some fluids, but when they saw this was not helping and noticed how pale she was, it prompted them to draw up her labs. The results came back that her hemoglobin levels were at 2.6. Her levels should have been at 10. They immediately airlifted her to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

During this time, she almost lost her little life. After countless tests, they finally diagnosed her with Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA).

Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare blood disorder that affects the bone marrow. The function of the bone marrow is to make new blood cells, including red blood cells (which carry oxygen to the body’s tissues), white blood cells (which help the body fight infections), and platelets (which help the body stop bleeding). In DBA the bone marrow cannot make enough red blood cells to meet the body’s needs. DBA is characterized by a shortage of red blood cells which usually becomes evident during the first year of life when the patient develops anemia. There is no cure for this.

Once diagnosed, she had to receive a blood transfusion. They thought this would help her, but her levels continued to drop and she was literally in and out of the hospital once and sometimes twice a week to receive blood transfusions. Along with the transfusions, she was put on a plethora of different steroids that did not help her. She was hospitalized 7 times where they had to keep her overnight for several days for evaluation.

Now realizing that none of the above treatment plans are working, the doctors have decided that she needs to have a bone marrow transplant.

Nariah’s big sister, Liliana who is 4 years old, was tested and is a 100% match. She will be her sister’s donor and hero.

Nariah is currently in the hospital (6/11/20) to receive a MedComp Catheter. There was some complications with the procedure the first time around. She lost more blood than anticipated, and her blood pressure, heart rate and hemoglobin levels were dropping at a rapid rate, so they had to stop and place her in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit. Today (6/12/20), they tried again, and the procedure was successful.

Next step will be to clean her plasma, and then a full week of Chemo.

Once Chemo is completed, Liliana and Nariah will go into surgery where the bone marrow transplant will occur on June 22, 2020. Recovery will be anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, hoping there is no complications for either child. Sherresha is the only parent allowed to be in the hospital due to all the COVID stuff going on, and David (father) is at home with their other children trying to hold down the fort.

As you can imagine, this has taken a toll on the family. They have a total of 4 daughters. Sherresha has been out of work due to Nariah’s illness and constant need for care. This has put a financial burden on the family along with all the medical bills now and to come.

Seeing any of your children fall this ill has got to be every parent’s worst nightmare. Then to have to make the decision for your 4 year old to be a donor cannot be an easy one.

I am hoping you can find it in your heats to donate to this wonderful family. All donations, big or small, are welcome. Every little bit helps and is one less stress on this family’s plate. Please feel free to share the link as well.

Thank you so much,

Amanda
