I am running my first ever half marathon to fundraise money for the Da'aro Youth Project and I need your help. Please take a moment to read the below and donate, donate, share and donate!
Da'aro Youth project is a charity that supports and empowers unaccompanied young asylum-seekers from East Africa.
This initiative came about after Benjamin Hunter's best friend Alex, a young Eritrean asylum seeker took his own life at the age of 18 after struggling with his mental health. Following Alex's tragic death, some members of the British-Eritrean community in South London wanted to do something to help young people arriving in the UK unaccompanied to better integrate into the community and to help support their mental health and social needs.
Adapting to a new life and culture can be very isolating all whilst trying to get through a very convoluted asylum process and overcoming the loss and trauma many of them have experienced on their indescribable journeys in the hope of a better life.
Da'aro project organises a weekly evening youth group for asylum-seekers and refugees ages 13-21+, called 'Injera Club', where they are provided with home-cooked Eritrean and Ethiopian food . It is also an opportunity to socialise and simply relax. The second project is the 'Loss Survivors Support Group' which brings young people affected by loss together to learn, create, connect - and have fun. Da'aro provides young people with advice, guidance and (where necessary) limited casework. In addition to this, they also run occasional activities and trips outside of London.
Your contribution has the possibility of saving someone's life. The charity intends to expand these projects by providing mentoring/befriending service to connect unaccompanied young people with an older person from within the British-Eritrean community in London or a British-Eritrean family.
Please donate and share! <3
