My name is Nanette Longchamp. I am currently a teacher in the Sunnyside School District in Tucson, AZ, and a graduate of the University of Arizona and Rodel Scholar. As part of my professional development, I am hoping to fulfill my dream to learn about different education systems in other parts of the world and to help develop local school communities by helping train teachers.
I have been awarded a fellowship position with Limited Resources Teacher Training (https://www.lrtt.org/) to join with teachers in Guyana, who desperately seek training on curriculum development and teaching methods. We have a shared goal that by learning teaching methods from each other, we may benefit our students with new perspectives. With your help, we can make our shared vision a reality.
In Guyana, 60% of teachers begin their careers right after High School. Furthermore, these teachers face incredible challenges such as underfunded professional development and very few resources in their classrooms. Their teachers do not receive enough training, and so they must rely on any help they can receive from other sources.
Under the LRTT fellowship, I will work with teachers in a rural area of Guyana over three weeks. I will be working closely with teachers, leading training workshops and coaching these teachers through improvements of their teaching practice. At the same time, I hope to learn from their cultural perspective on teaching, how they approach their students, existing curricula and plan lessons.
To participate in this project for a June 16, 2019 departure, I will need to raise a total of $2,000 to assist me in covering a total cost of $3,700. The funds are for the following; flight cost, membership fee, vaccinations and classroom supplies. I have contributed $1,700 from my salary, and I am currently raising the balance through donations and fundraising efforts. I would be extremely grateful for your contribution to sustaining education for our future.
