Nancy was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma right before Thanksgiving, 2015. Previously an avid walker, she went from being physically fit to being confined to a wheelchair.
Who could have suspected that the nerve pain she’d felt in her hand resulted from a malignant tumor wrapped around 3 vertebrae of her upper spine? Fortunately for Nancy, the neurosurgeon in ER operated immediately, helping her avoid total paralysis.
Nancy is recuperating at a friend's home in the Ballard area of Seattle. She has multiple chemo, spine, and rehab appointments ahead of her, each requiring many visits to a hospital in Bellevue, east of Seattle. She cannot drive, so she needs specialized wheelchair transportation to these treatments.
Nancy remains positive. She is supported by good friends and family. But, the nerve damage may take up to a year to heal, and her doctors have given her no promise of total recovery from either the cancer or the spinal cord injury.
