My name is Linda Neyer and I started this Go Fund Me campaign for my sister Nancy Gilpin. The purpose is to help her pay her medical bills and expenses due to side effects for stage IV lung cancer treatment. We live in different states (I'm in Pennsylvania and she's in Minnesota) and it has been frustating to be so far away. This fundraiser is one way I thought I might help her. She is not comfortable asking for financial help from others because she doesn't want to be a burden, but I convinced her to let me start this fundraiser because I believe family and friends can and want to help. Any donation, no matter how small, will help her, both materially and spiritually.
My sister Nancy has heroically struggled and remained hopeful throughout her treatment for lung cancer. She had surgery in July to remove part of her lung and two small tumors; initially the doctors thought the tumors were different cancer types, but pathology confirmed they were the same, hence the stage IV diagnosis. Her oncologist prescribed four chemotherapy treatments, using the heaviest-duty, harshest drugs available, as her best chance for survival. She received her first chemo treatment on August 26th and the final one on October 28th.
Her doctors tell her she has tolerated the treatments remarkably well, but she has also experienced some significant physical and cognitive problems -- so-called "chemo-brain" -- from the chemotherapy drugs and steroids. These side effects have made her unable to work during the treatment and recovery process, and the best case scenario for her to return to work is early February. In the meantime, she has applied for long term disability, which only pays 66% of her salary; furthermore, her deductibles and co-payments are very high and will reset again on January first. She is currently using savings to meet her expenses now, but these are meagre and will probably be depleted before she returns to work. In short, she does not know how she will manage to pay her bills, her insurance premiums, and her food and medicines until she can begin work again. My big concern is that she needs to focus on her recovery and not on financial worries at this point.
My plan is to send her some money every two weeks starting now to somewhat compensate for her loss of pay and to preserve some savings. I will be so grateful for whatever help you can provide. It will mean so much to her and to me to know that there are others who care and will help. Thank you!
