My mom, Nancy (Moore Mallory) Aki, almost 77 years old, needs surgery immediately, or within the next seven days (Sept. 3, 2015), before the broken bones start to set. She severely broke her ankle in 3 different places, is in a lot of pain, and exhausted with barely being able to get up to use the restroom with her crutches. The hole you see in the cast is where the bone is sticking out through the skin. She currently lives in China alone, and has a small social security income. Hospitals are a bit different in China; most transactions are done in cash. Initially a friend came to her rescue and loaned her the required $500 hospital deposit that took care of most of the costs, tests, etc. She since has returned home from the hospital as the funds have run out even though she needs further treatment.
On Monday she learned that the surgery alone is going to cost $6,000.00. My mom does have Medi-Care in the states, and it would pay 80% of the bill, however, returning to the states for surgery is not an option. The risk of blood clots with a 19 hour flight home is very high, and is in no condition to travel.
How it happened: Thursday, August 20th, she was feeling dizzy and while at the supermarket, went to the restroom, where she blacked out, fell down inside a small squat toilet, and completely turned her ankle sideways. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
My mom does have friends who have been visiting and bringing her lunch and dinner meals, but needs 24 hour care, especially after her surgery, as it is going to be a long road to recovery. I know my brother Kevin feels just as helpless and distressed as I do, as we are unable to be there with her, and are unable to give her the financial help she so desperately needs. She has received some cash from friends and family, but not enough for surgery, and the care she will need after.
Any help is appreciated, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
