Nancy's Going Home - Medical & Transport Fund

There are people who come along in life, which will mean more than you can ever imagine. When you meet them, some times you know immediately, this one is a keeper. Other times it's more subtle, it's a relationship built up over time. It's built-in moments of full-body laughter. It's solidified in moments of sadness and heartbreak.

Nancy Hodge is my aunt, and she's one of those people you want in your life. For me, Nancy was one of those people I got to know through the laughter and tears. She started as my aunt, but as I grew up, she became more of a big sister. Which I find funny since she was the baby growing up with five older siblings.Nancy and I would call each other names and make faces across the room whenever we'd get together for reunions. She always had a comeback for whatever got tossed at her. I loved it. After I started my family, she became Aunt Nancy to my girls. Raising my daughters now, I want them to be like her. Bold and fearless, strong and determined. With an enormous heart and a sassy clever wit that runs wide to their core. I want them to be like Nancy.

So how did we get here?
Nancy is currently fighting every hour of the day, as hard as her body will allow, to fend off cancer. The battle started sometime two years ago. It was shortly after a physical and a clean bill of health when she went back with concerns and discomfort. After two rounds of chemo and admission into a drug trial, the doctors have given her ~5 months to live. At this point, she's lived in Texas for over 30 years. With the limited time she has left, she desires more than anything to return home to Pennsylvania. To be surrounded by family while she makes her last stand against cancer.

Why does she need help?
Having an immune system that has been battered by the battle and chemo, making the trek from TX to PA is one filled with danger, toss in a global pandemic for drama and good measure, and you practically have no way to make this happen. Air travels is out since, well, COVID plus normal germs and incubating airports. Add traveling with oxygen tanks and nausea mediation; you get the picture. Next, we turned to a good old fashion road trip. Traveling that distance at a pace she can withstand would take a week. I imagine something akin to covered wagon speeds. Add in countless touchpoints for COVID to make an unwelcomed introduction, and that option is out.

The solution.
What we have found is something that checks all the boxes, everything from safe transport to quick and comfortable. This transport would not only drive the 1,240+ miles but do it overnight. Allowing Nancy to rest as she traveled with a bed, bathroom, and an accompanying medical assistant to help manage her medication while in route.

How you can help.
We are looking to raise funds to pay for this safe travel back home. Additional funds would help with funeral expenses and additional medical bills. Thank you for taking the time to come here and consider donating. Every little bit will help. Thank you so much.
