It has been over a month since the world lost a wonderful teacher, a caring friend and a beautiful soul, Nancy Peer. She will be missed by her loving family, her friends, and the students, teachers and staff of the elementary school where she spent two decades teaching. Nancy was truly loved at Ford Elementary in Richmond, CA, where generations knew her as Ms. Peer.

Education was Nancy’s passion and her dedication and her joy for learning touched the lives of countless young people. She helped implement the innovative Microsociety program, one of the first in California, fostering a sense of social awareness and social participation among students. She taught her favorite subjects, American History and California History, to many years of fourth and fifth-graders. She led field trips to museums and sites around the Bay Area. She was a cherished member of the family of teaching professionals at Ford Elementary, and continued returning there to work as a substitute teacher even after she retired.

A colleague of Nancy’s recently wrote:

"I was very ill over Christmas break, and when it was time to go back to school, I was not able to go.  Nancy stepped in.  She was a force of nature.  She supported me, and helped me tremendously.  Whenever I told the kids I would be absent and that they would have another teacher, they yelled "IS IT MS. PEER??"  She had fun with them, she would be silly and goofy with them, and they loved her.

"Once, I had a student who had emotional issues and a lot of impulsivity.  He walked out of the schoolyard at recess, walked up the street a ways and put out his thumb to hitchhike. Nancy calmly and gently took him by the hand and led him back in.  I shudder to think what might have happened to him, had Nancy not helped lead him back to school."

The Nancy Peer Memorial Library Fund will go towards furthering Nancy’s passion for education and for fostering a love of learning among the young people of Ford Elementary.
