Prior to March 5th, Carol Long (aka Nana and Mom) was a spunky, very independent lady. She went on 2-4 mile walks every day, babysat little kiddos multiple times a week, and marched to the beat of her own drum, all while being a shining light for Jesus.
On the morning of March 5th Nana was accidentally ran over by a commercial lawnmower while she was on a walk. She was instantly unconscious. The phone calls that began circulating on that day and days to come made that day and the following days the hardest days for her family and friends who love her so dearly.
Below are a list of the injuries she sustained:
-Collapsed lungs
-Hypoxia from lack of oxygen, causing a traumatic brain injury
-Partial facial degloving requiring stitches above her left eye
-Broken left cheek bone and laceration below her left eye
-Broken left clavicle
-17 broken ribs, in 24 places
-All 5 lumbar vertebrae broken
-3 breaks in her pelvis
-Laceration on her liver
-Leak in her bladder
-Multiple deep tissue abrasions
She was in ICU for 16 days, moved to step down care 4 days. Then had to fight off pneumonia a second time, so she was re-intubated and placed back in ICU for 7 days. She moved to step-down care for 6 days, and then to in-patient rehab for 11 days.
On April 18th she was discharged to come home! We were so excited to finally be with her in person since the hospital had been under quarantine since March 17th!
She is a fighter and is determined to get back to 100%! She is already walking close to a quarter of a mile every day and her loving, spunky, personality coming back. The healing of her traumatic brain injury from her lack of oxygen will be her biggest hurdle at this point. We need to have 24-hour care for her to help make sure that she is safe.
Hundreds if not thousands of people have been praying for her worldwide, and we cannot express our gratitude towards those prayer warriors. And she has felt so loved and supported by all the cards, gifts, and flowers everyone has sent.
We are setting up this GoFundMe page to help offset the costs for her 24-hour care providers for the next few months. There is no telling when or if she will be able to get back to full independence, but we know she is alive is a walking miracle. Due to Covid-19 and the high cost associated with a respite care home and/or having having an home care agency come to her house, we are taking alternative options in order to decrease the costs for her. We are hoping we can get some funds to offset the costs that do remain.
Whether it's $1 or $100, every dollar would be greatly appreciated by Nana and our family.
Her friends, family and community surprised her with a "social distancing" homecoming party. Click here for the video!
Thank you and God Bless!
