Hi, this is Thomas "NK Scratch" with the Nam Knights of America MC, Coastal Plain Chapter, We are raising money to support our brother Dave "NK GPS" and his family during this difficult time. All the funds will go directly to him and his family for support. Below is a summary from the family.
74 year young avid motorcyclist collided with a delivery truck.
On February 9, 2023 Papa Dave was out for one of his (almost daily) 250 mile rides around the backroads of North Carolina and Virginia. At approximately 1500, just south of Lawrenceville Virginia, he made contact with a delivery truck and crashed his motorcycle. He was airlifted to Chippenham Hospital where he was revived twice and underwent other life saving measures. Papa Dave is broken from head to toe, literally including toes.
Thank Jesus, he was wearing his helmet but still sustained a hematoma and couple of minor brain bleeds. He ruptured one disk, fractured 3 vertebrae, and tore a tendon in his neck. Fractured both shoulder blades. Broke his sternum, all the ribs on his right side and 9 on the left. He has a myriad of broken bones, torn tendons and ligaments starting at the knees down into the toes on both legs. In addition to the breaks and tears, he’s had his spleen, gallbladder, appendix, and part of his intestines removed. After being intubated for approximately 2 weeks he received a tracheotomy for mechanical ventilation and surgical feeding tube. He has undergone 10 surgeries thus far, and several more to go to fix his breaks and tears. As of March 1, he is still in the ICU at Chippenham Hospital, fighting sepsis, kidney failure requiring dialysis, and liver failure.
You may be thinking, how does a 74 year old survive all of that? First and foremost he is a Marine. Secondly, he heard that 60 is the new 30, so he believes he is 44. He is very fit, works out on his Chuck Norris gym 3 times a day and walks 5 miles a day. He does that so he can ride (what was) his 800+ lb Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide. I’m not saying my Dad loves his bike more than his family but on sunny warm days we all know what wins.
We are extremely blessed that Papa Dave was airlifted to Chippenham. The ICU staff is amazing. We know he is getting the best possible care. That being said it is still a struggle given this hospital is 2+ hours from his home in North Carolina. My sister and I are in from Wisconsin. We are residing in a local hotel and our brother is traveling back and forth from his home in NC. Our Mom passed 11 years ago or she would be by his bedside too.
We have been blessed with financial gifts from family, friends, and our extended family the Coastal Plain Chapter of the Nam Knights of America ( of which Dad is a patched member). These donations have enabled my sister and I to remain close to Dad. Many people have asked how they can help. First and foremost, Prayers are the most helpful at this time. As uncomfortable as this is to ask, financial assistance would be welcomed. We are in day 19 in the ICU and Dad is still not stable. We are looking at at least two additional weeks in ICU once he is stable, at least an additional 2 weeks after ICU for the broken bone surgeries, then a rehabilitation facility that can manage his recovery with the tracheotomy and feeding tube. Dad does have health insurance but we anticipate the medical bills will be extensive. We appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thank you in advance for your thoughts, prayers, and contributions. We are humbled by the outpouring of support.
