First of all, I want to acknowledge that in this time, there are so many causes to contribute to. There are floods, fires, and so much pain and suffering in this world. In times like these, lending a hand to someone in need can remind us of the strength and hope we all carry when we show up for each other. I hope today might be a moment where you feel moved to do just that.
My step-daughter, Nala Eoff, was in a serious car accident on Friday, July 11th, while on her way to pick up her daughter from daycare. As she was driving down her residential street, another driver ran a stop sign. Nala swerved to avoid a collision, thankfully preventing major harm to the other driver, but in doing so, her own car was totaled, and she suffered injuries to her back, neck, and left knee.
Nala is one of the most inspiring women I know. She has gone through more hardships in her young life than any ten people. She is a full-time single mom to an amazing two-year-old. She lives alone in Kennewick, WA, where she moved to support her (now ex-) husband, but is unfortunately several hours away from her family.
To support herself and her daughter, she not only works full-time, but also works nights and weekends driving for instacart. Loosing her car doesn't only impair her ability to get to her day job, but also to earn the essential extra cash she needs to survive as a single mom.
To make matters worse, a week before the accident, Nala lost her Medicaid coverage due to making slightly over the income threshold. Though she’s signed up for new insurance, it won’t start until August 1st—leaving her with no coverage for her accident-related medical bills in the meantime. She also only carried the minimum required car insurance, which means no coverage for personal injury or a replacement vehicle. We’re already seeing medical costs pile up in the thousands, and any possible settlement from the accident could be months away.
Nala's mom (my wife) and I are doing what we can to help, but this is a time when we need to reach out to our wider community for support. I am hopeful that together, we can support this hard-working mom and her sweet daughter. We plan to use the funds to:
- Help Nala get a safe, reliable vehicle ($5000-6000 range)
- Pay back the remainder owed on her totalled car ($1500)
- Cover medical bills for her injuries
If you are able to contribute any amount, be it $5, $50, or by sharing this campaign, it would mean so very much to us. Supporting Nala right now means helping a mom regain her independence, continue working, and provide for her daughter.
